Beaches

Latvia isn’t particularly famous for its coast. However, there are many lovely sandy beaches to be found on the Baltic coast and, although the waters are not extraordinarily warm, the coast attracts both locals and tourists. The most popular beaches are located in Jurmala, Liepaja and the Gulf of Riga.


Sightseeing

Riga is one of the most beautiful cities in the Baltic region. Tourists will be astonished by the medieval architecture, cobbled streets, the Cathedral, the city Canal Parks and the Bastion Hill. Riga’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also home to dozens of museums and art galleries. Those who would like to enjoy nature will be pleased with what can be found in the Latvian national parks.


Hiking/Walking

Latvia is a great destination for hikers. National parks such as Gauja and Kemeri are favourite among hikers. There are numerous, diverse trails and routes in all regions of Latvia.


Skiing

Latvia is a fairly flat country but it has heavy snowfall in winter and thus, it offers pretty good opportunities for skiers. The ski season lasts from December to March. The best slopes include Baili, Gaizinkalns, Reina Trase and Sigulda.


Water sports

Latvian coast, lakes and rivers offer a wide variety of opportunities to practice water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, boating and water skiing.


Fishing

In Latvia one can fish for eel, herring, perch, pike, salmon and many other fish species. Fishing requires a fishing permit. Permits can be purchased from angler’s shops and fishing clubs. Additionally, if one wants to fish in private lakes and ponds they must pay a the owner.


Rock climbing

As a fairly flat country, Latvia doesn’t offer many opportunities for outdoor climbing. However, there are many places where one can practice indoor climbing.


Nightlife

Latvia has a diverse nightlife, especially vibrant in summer. In Riga, for example, there are numerous restaurants, cocktail bars, outdoor cafes and nightclubs.


Others

Besides activities mentioned above, a good idea to spend one’s time in Latvia is wildlife and bird watching in one of several national parks. Enthusiasts of more extreme forms of entertainment may try bobsleighing, bungee jumping, hot air balloon flights, parachuting or paintball.
