Slovakia boasts dozens of tourist attractions. In Bratislava places worth visiting include the charming Old Town, the magnificent Bratislava Castle, the neo-Classical Primatial Palace and the famous Slovak National Theatre. There are also numerous galleries and museums to be found in the capital (i.e. the Museum of Clocks, the Bratislava City Museum and the Historical and Music Museum). There is also plenty to see outside the capital. For example, numerous castles: the renaissance castle Devín, the Spis Castle and the castle in Nitra.

Hiking and rock climbing

Hiking is very popular in Slovakia as it has a great network of well-marked routes, for example in the Small Carpathians. Rock climbing is also possible, for example in the Tatras and Malá Fatra National Parks. Hiking and rock climbing give a good opportunity to explore the unspoiled nature and wildlife.


Slovakia offers great winter sports opportunities. There are dozens of ski resorts with exhilarating and properly equipped slopes. There are trails both for beginners and more advanced skiers. Some of the ski resorts are: Bachledova Dolina, Podbanske, Stary Smokovec, Strbske Pleso, Zdiar in the High Tatras, Certovica, Chopok, Jasna in the Low Tatras, and Ski Park Ruzomberok.

Water sports

Although Slovakia is a landlocked country, there are many lakes and rivers where people can go swimming, canoeing, rafting or boating. The best locations for water sports include the Danube River, Liptovská Mara, Orava and Zemplínska Sírava.


Fishing in Slovakia requires a licence. Visitors can obtain a seasonal or a guest fishing licence from the Slovak Fishing Association. One can fish for brabel, bream, carp, huchen, sheatfish, starlet, trout and zander. However, from October 1 to April 15 fishing is prohibited in the trout waters, and from January 1 to May 31 fishing is prohibited in the grayling waters.


Slovakia has a diverse nightlife. In major cities one can find various nightspots where they can relax, eat, drink and dance. When in Bratislava, one can also go for an evening in the opera or in the theatre or attend a concert.


Slovakia is also famous for its numerous thermal spas and curative springs.
